As deep fat fryers have changed in design and are now very safe not many homes use fire blankets anymore, however they are great in commercial kitchens because it is much easier to put out a pan fire with a fire blanket. The simplicity of the fire blanket means it is useful in many areas which has led to its increased use. A fire blanket is used for protection while escaping in many commercial sites, and is very useful for the small fires in laboratories, which is just thrown over the area before things get out of hand, or even to extinguish a waste paper bin fire. Fire blankets are still recommended but they must comply with BS 6575, which in 1997 became BS EN 1869:1997. If either of these standards is present your fire blankets are fully compliant.
